Chapter 239 - 99 Horses Don’t Get Fat Without Eating Night Grass_1
Chapter 239: Chapter 99 Horses Don’t Get Fat Without Eating Night Grass_1By the time Yan Fei managed to change his appearance, get dressed, and blend into the crowd, most of the bits and pieces from the factory were almost all moved out.
Everyone was racing against time, and any little bit they could carry away was progress. The easy-to-take items were certainly the first to go. What was left either got crushed under collapsed buildings and was now too solid to lift, or were the bodies of big machinery — their components all stripped off, leaving only the massive and heavy remnants that couldn’t be moved out immediately.
As the carryable stuff got less and less, people began organizing manpower to remove the debris from the collapsed factory buildings. Each time they dug something out, everyone rushed over, fighting to claim a piece of the bounty.
Watching the scramble, Yan Fei instinctively started looking for a deserted corner, scouting for something heavy that others couldn’t lift but was suitable for him to take.
He was very familiar with all the factory buildings in the compound and soon found a place with a few large machines lying around. All detachable parts from the machines had been stripped off, and all the movable items around them were gone. Therefore, no one was around here.
Even more importantly, this spot was shielded from the crowd’s view by half a wall. So, he could do things here without being seen from the outside. Judging from the few left-over machines, Yan Fei reckoned he could probably move them. Without further ado, he quickly picked one up.
No sooner had the machine left the ground, he disappeared, only to reappear empty-handed. This happened a few more times, and soon only the smallest machine was left. He made an effort to lift it, feeling rather surprised.
This was the smallest machine, and yet it was so heavy. In the dim light, he took a careful look and realized that the machine was firmly fixed to the ground because it was so small.
Too lazy to use brute force, he leisurely pulled out a wooden pillar from the nearby pile of debris, shoved it under the machine to pry it up. But just as he started, there was a sound, and he paused.
Soon, the footsteps echoing from the other side of the wall got clearer. Yan Fei had great eyesight. As soon as the person came over, he recognized that it was a trembling old man.
While others were carrying torches and flashlights, he was holding an air-dying lamp in one hand and a bottle of liquor in the other. Chuckling to himself as he walked, if not for all these people around, Yan Fei would have thought he had finally seen a ghost.
These air-dying lamps are rare to come by these days. The bottom could hold some kerosene, and the top was a glass cover wrapped in iron wire, windproof, hence the name air-dying lamp.
Apparently, the old man had not expected anyone to be in this area. Yan Fei was standing in a spot obscured by the wall, shrouded in darkness. The old man was nearly upon him before he noticed Yan Fei, and it gave him quite a start.
Only after he settled down, he raised the air-dying lamp to look at Yan Fei, and then chuckled at Yan Fei, "Young man, everyone’s moving things away. Why aren’t you in a hurry? Hurry up, take away as much as you can, and empty this factory..."
Upon closer inspection, Yan Fei figured the old man probably wouldn’t last more than a few days. The feeling of being on his last breath was similar to that of old dinosaurs in the prehistoric world being ambushed and hunted by carnivores. If not for his breathing, Yan Fei would think he was already dead.
Moreover, the old man’s creepy way of speaking gave him the creeps. He couldn’t be bothered with this nutty old man; Yan Fei just turned around and left. After all, there were other things in this broad space that he could move.
As he was leaving, he could still hear the old man muttering, "Hurry up and move... move... it’s good when it’s empty... it’s good when it’s empty..."
What a nutter!
Yan Fei cursed in his mind. An old man, instead of staying at home, came out to this chaos. Seeing the way he walked, he couldn’t carry away anything anyway!
After another round of
So, he stood on the top floor, vanished for a moment, and when he reappeared, he was holding a chair. He set it down and comfortably watched others moving things.
It was dark anyway, nobody would see him. Besides, nobody would notice him in the corner on the top floor. They’re all busy moving things!
After waiting for a while, he saw people leaving and more coming, but the crowd remained unchanged. Yan Fei was in no hurry. Indeed, he would come back tomorrow night if he left tonight. If they moved everything while he stayed put, he would end up with nothing.
He mumbled to himself that one doesn’t get rich without side income! Tonight, we might make a fortune. When those machines are moved, even selling them for scrap metal would fetch a good amount of money!
While calculating how much money he would earn, he suddenly heard a distant sound of a police siren. Despite the noise from the people moving items and tractors, Yan Fei instantly recognized it.
The people in the factory area hadn’t noticed yet, and within a few moments, several vehicles had arrived.
There was a police car at the front, very high-end, followed by an ordinary sedan and two Jeeps.
The sight of the police car immediately made people pause their activities, but there were quite a few who hadn’t noticed and were still moving things around.
As soon as the vehicles stopped, a person came out of the front police car with a megaphone and started shouting, "Folks, stop moving! Stop moving! These things belong to someone; taking them home would be committing a crime!"
After the megaphone announcement was repeated a few times, people got out of the cars behind as well.
Out of the sedan came two middle-aged men in suits, along with a young man wearing glasses. The men coming out of the two Jeeps were all policemen.
