Chapter 1992 Death Situation
Chapter 1992 Death Situation
The bones were piled from the ground to the top of the cave, more than two people high. They were messy yet faintly revealed a strange order.
The bones at the bottom layer were somewhat deformed due to being compressed and covered with thick dust, while the bones at the upper layer were relatively intact. The hollow eye sockets of some skulls were facing the silver ingots, as if gazing silently.
Some of the ribs were spread open, as if they had been broken apart; some tiny finger and toe bones were exposed from the cracks in the bone mountain, as if they were struggling to crawl out.
The firelight shone on the white bones, reflecting a bleak grayish-white color. Some bones still had dark red marks on them, and it was unknown whether they were dried blood or something else.
Occasionally, a few bones would roll down from the mountain of bones and hit the ground with a "thump" sound. The sound echoed in the empty cave, which was particularly harsh.
Yinding felt a chill rushing from the soles of his feet to the top of his head, and the blood in his body seemed to solidify. He opened his mouth, but no sound came out. He could only stare at the mountain of bones, his heart beating wildly in his chest, as if it was going to break through his ribs and jump out.
Purgatory on earth.
These four words came out of Yinding's heart uncontrollably.
He had followed the prince in his battles, seen dead soldiers being eaten by wild dogs, and seen civilians lying dead on the streets after the plague, but none of that could compare to the scene before him.
These were not a mess of corpses caused by natural disasters or man-made calamities, but someone had deliberately piled these bones into a mountain. Each bone bore traces of being gnawed and destroyed, telling of the pain suffered in life.
Just when Yinding was feeling cold all over and almost unable to breathe, he felt a gust of wind blowing towards him.
He suddenly came to his senses and looked around vigilantly. When his eyes swept across the side of the bone mountain, he found that there was a narrow passage there.
The entrance to the passage was only one person wide and as black as ink. Even the light from a tinderbox could not penetrate. One could only vaguely see that the inner wall of the passage was uneven, as if it had been dug by something.
An even colder wind blew out from the passage, carrying a faint fishy smell, brushing against Yinding's cheek, making him shiver.
The starling had landed on a bone at the entrance of the passage at some point, its bright black eyes staring into the depths of the passage. Its shrill cries became more rapid, and its wings flapped continuously, as if giving a warning or urging something else.
Yinding held the tinder and moved forward. The flame swayed violently in the cold wind at the entrance of the passage, but it could not illuminate the scene in the passage. The darkness seemed to have life, silently swallowing up the light.
He swallowed, only to feel his throat become dry and painful.
Where does this passage lead to? Are there more bones inside?
Or... is there something else gnawing on these bones?
Suddenly, there was a dripping sound from the cave wall, like the sound of water dripping on stone.
Yinding followed the sound and saw a stalactite hanging from the ceiling of the cave. A drop of water was dripping from the top and fell into the eye socket of a skull, making a crisp sound.
The sound was particularly clear in the silent cave, but it made Yinding even more panicked - there was no other sound in the cave except his breathing, the cry of the starling, and the sound of dripping water.
The silence made him feel even more terrified, as if countless pairs of eyes were hidden in the darkness, staring at him, the uninvited guest.
Yinding's hand trembled slightly, and the flame of the tinderbox dimmed a little.
He looked at the mountain of bones in front of him, then at the dark and dim passage. His heart seemed to be pulled by two hands - should he turn around and leave, or walk down the passage?
But when he thought of the bones that had been gnawed to pieces, he felt as if his legs were filled with lead and he couldn't move a single step.
The starling suddenly stopped flapping its wings and tilted its head to stare into the depths of the passage.
Yinding's heart sank suddenly. He seemed to hear a very faint sound coming from the depths of the passage, like the sound of claws scratching on rocks, or the low growl of some wild beast. It was vague, but enough to make the hairs on his body stand up again.
He looked at the thick and impenetrable darkness and felt as if he was standing at the entrance of hell, and that mountain of bones was the doorplate of hell.
……
Yan Ruyu pushed open the door, stepped aside to let Chuntao in, and spoke in a flat voice.
"Go back to your original position and do what you need to do."
Chun Tao tightened her grip on the hem of her clothes, her fingertips turning white. She lowered her head, not daring to look at Yan Ruyu, her voice trembling: "What happened just now..."
"What happened just now?" Yan Ruyu interrupted her, her tone devoid of emotion. "I haven't seen this before, and you haven't experienced it either. Remember?"
Chun Tao's body stiffened, then she nodded vigorously, her forehead almost touching her collar. "Yes, I'll remember. Just pretend... just pretend nothing happened."
In the other side of the side yard, Huo Changhe looked at the untied Ali, kicked a small paper bag over with his toes, and said in a voice as cold as ice: "Pick it up."
Ali squatted down, trembling. His fingertips touching the paper bag felt like they were touching a branding iron. He looked up at Huo Changhe, his eyes full of pleading: "This is..."
"Poison." Huo Changhe said it bluntly. "If you dare to leak a single word of what you saw or heard tonight, this poison will explode in your stomach and cause you to die of pain."
Ali's face instantly turned pale. He clutched the paper bag tightly in his hand. His knees gave way and he knelt down, kowtowing repeatedly: "Have mercy! I didn't see a thing! I didn't hear a thing! Even if it rots in my stomach, I won't say a word!"
Huo Changhe snorted coldly, turned around and left without saying anything else.
After leaving the courtyard, the breeze from the corridor brought a bit of coolness. Yan Ruyu turned her head to look at Huo Changhe beside her and asked, "Do you think the two of them can survive?"
Huo Changhe didn't stop, his eyes fixed on the darkness in the distance, and he said firmly: "Chun Tao can, after all, she still has to go to Longyin Island."
He paused, then changed the subject, "Ali definitely can't do that."
Yan Ruyu heard this and did not ask why.
Ding Hengshou gave Chuntao to Ali, and from that time on, Ali was doomed.
Even if Chuntao is not even a concubine, but just a plaything, a man like Ding Hengshou will not allow anyone else to touch Chuntao.
It was only a matter of time before Ali died.
Huo Changhe glanced at her and saw that she looked unhappy, so he knew what she was thinking.
Yan Ruyu seems cold, but she is actually soft-hearted, especially when facing life.
Huo Changhe wanted to cheer her up, so he suggested, "How about we find something else for Ding Hengshou to do?"
Yan Ruyu chuckled: "Okay."
When Huo Changhe saw her smile, he also felt happy.
His eyes curved slightly as he came up with an idea.
"follow me."
The two figures quickly merged into the deeper darkness.
