Chapter 569 Daughter of the Sea
Chapter 569 Daughter of the Sea
All troubles seemed to be no trouble in front of Catherine.
She only glanced at Fred briefly before ordering the knight to clear the crowded streets.
"I'll take care of it." Her Royal Highness's voice was calm and reassuring. She patted Lilith's hand and motioned them to leave first.
Fred, who had just been shouting in front of Lilith and the others, was like a chicken with its neck strangled. He didn't dare to make a sound until the crowd dispersed and Lilith and the others left.
"Maybe he smelled the scent of power." Lulu said seriously on the way, making everyone else laugh and insisting that she tell her what that smell was.
"It's a reassuring smell." Lulu thought for a moment, "With Catherine around, it seems like I don't need to worry about anything else. I can just focus on my job."
Lilith walked at the end and listened quietly to her companions' conversation. In fact, she felt that Lulu was right. Every time Catherine came back from Highgarden, Lilith felt that she had become a little different.
Highgarden was like a furnace forging flesh and blood. It constantly tried to melt Catherine into a pool of molten iron and then pour it into the same boring mold as everyone else, but it only made her spine harder and harder to break.
Catherine is becoming more and more like a leader.
……
"I can't leave, Lucas."
Ke Luo's voice was soft and gentle, but she firmly rejected her brother. He had run all the way here, and his blue hair on his forehead was all wet with sweat. As soon as he opened his mouth, he wanted to take her away.
Lucas barely caught his breath, stunned after being rejected. "Why? We're rich now, and we have a waterproof house. Gloria is different from other places. You can live well without Fred. I won't let you and Mom go hungry!"
Ke Luo stood inside the door where the sunlight couldn't reach. Her blue hair, the same as Lucas's, swayed gently as she shook her head, like a sapphire in a dark room.
"Fred helped me when I was in the most difficult time, and I can't leave him when he is in the most difficult time." Ke Luo explained softly.
"Don't be silly, Chloe." Lucas spoke quickly, feeling as though Fred would rush back and stop him at any moment. "He's helping you because you're beautiful. There are so many sea creatures starving to death. Why doesn't he help others?"
His words were too blunt, causing Ke Luo to look hurt.
"...I understand men better than you." Lucas felt a little reluctant when he saw this, but he still continued with a hard heart, "He needs a beautiful wife to decorate the facade and show his business success, but this trick no longer works in Highgarden and Gloria. Otherwise, why would he never take you out for socializing-"
"Yes, I did." Ke Luo refuted softly without much confidence, "I once had afternoon tea with him and Mr. Hingis..."
Lucas was so angry that he almost laughed. Ke Luo's voice was not loud, but it was like a sledgehammer hitting his abdomen. He held on to the door for a long time and couldn't breathe.
Seeing her brother like this, Ke Luo felt bad too. She held on to the door tightly. "I know you're doing this for my own good, but I'm already married to Lucas. Fred is my husband, and he's really changed my life. How can I just run away when he's in trouble? Marriage is not a joke."
Before Lucas could speak, Ke Luo said solemnly:
"Moreover, we have sworn before the God of Light that we will be together forever and be loyal to each other, regardless of health or illness, wealth or poverty—"
"Fuck the God of Light! What the hell is that!"
Lucas suddenly collapsed and roared. Fred's house was facing the street, and countless people were looking over there because of the noise. Ke Luo's eyes were panicked. If this sentence were to reach the ears of the church, it would be enough to hang Lucas ten times, but his brother obviously didn't care anymore.
"Even if you want to serve the light, will the light embrace you? You are the daughter of the sea, a pagan! How can that damn oath bind you!" Lucas asked with red eyes.
“…I won’t leave.”
But Ke Luo simply repeated it softly, looking at her brother with gentle but insistent eyes: "If I leave now, we Sea People will truly be the 'ominous person' those people are talking about. Fred was harmed by the Sea People's wife. Do you understand?"
He understands nothing! Lucas just thinks it's ridiculous. He can't help but punch the door frame:
"So what?! What does it matter if I'm just a filthy and ominous sea dweller? Are other people's words and opinions that important?!"
"...You are not me, you don't understand."
"We are unlucky people, bastards abandoned by the sea god! Accept your fate, Ke Luo!" Lucas said hatefully.
Ke Luo was silent for a moment, then looked up at her brother, who was now taller than her. "You don't even accept your fate, Lucas. If you did, you wouldn't have gone through so much hardship to become a guardian of Goletia. I don't want to accept my fate either, so I married Fred. It's the same thing."
Lucas stared at Ke Luo for a long time with his mouth open. How could they be the same? How could they be the same? When he spoke again, his voice was choked with sobs. "Sister, come with me, please..."
Ke Luo stood in silence on the other side of the doorway. The sunlight only illuminated the porch and a small patch of tile in front of Lucas's shoes. The shadow inside the door seemed like an insurmountable chasm.
"Go back, Lucas." Ke Luo finally said softly, then slowly and completely closed the door.
