Chapter 422 Accidentally Achieved Great Merit
Li Ju'an bundled the wormwood into a ball, mixed in chili powder, and then added the wolf dung he had found.
Chen Xiangqian covered his nose and said with disgust, "Why do you have to mix wolf droppings in? This stuff is disgusting to look at, isn't it awful?"
Li Ju'an laughed heartily and said, "Wolf dung is excellent. The smoke from burning wolf dung can penetrate even the smallest cracks. Once the wolf dung smoke gets in, all the other smoke will follow."
Chen Xiangqian said, "How could that be? Would a university professor even know about this? You need to study physics to understand this. When did Brother Li become so cultured? He should go study physics!"
Li Ju'an raised his hand and lightly tapped his head, laughing and scolding, "Well, you learned all of this when you were taking your driving test. You can't be envious or jealous of it."
Chen Xiangqian clutched his head and said with a mournful face, "So what if I pass the driving test? It's not that great. Humph, I'll ask my dad to get me a driver's license too."
He pondered the question, wondering if his father would agree to him taking the driving test. The thought of learning mechanical principles and machine theory for the test gave him a headache. He'd have to lie face down, crawl under cars to repair them, change tires—such complicated work was simply beyond his capabilities.
He grinned and leaned close to Li Ju'an, saying, "I'll listen to Brother Li. Brother Li is busy, so I'll learn from you, hehe."
Li Ju'an began to smoke wormwood, stuffing a large bundle of wormwood mixed with chili powder and wolf dung into the tomb-robbing hole in the graveyard.
After the open flame was extinguished, thick smoke billowed out, and the smoke from burning wolf dung seeped into the cracks. Before long, sounds of monsters being drawn in could be heard from the surrounding graveyards.
The rustling sounds excited Lao Jiang and Lao Chen, who shouted excitedly, "The fox is coming out! Guard all the entrances!"
Ten hunters each guarded one entrance to the burrow, while the hunting dogs found other entrances nearby, unable to distinguish whether they were badger burrows, weasel burrows, or burrows.
The hunting dogs barked as soon as they saw the cave entrance. Old Chen cursed and shouted, "Go send two more people! There are still two caves left, damn it, hurry up and send two more people."
Each hunter was assigned to guard a cave entrance, but there simply weren't enough people. Li Ju'an whistled, and Da Hu and Bai Ao quickly took up positions at the newly emerged cave entrances. Xiao Gangpao and Hua Er also found their respective cave entrances and lay down to guard them.
Old Jiang said, "There are too many holes in the cemetery. I'm afraid they might escape from one of the other holes."
Li Ju'an called Hua Guniang to guard his cave entrance. Hua Guniang was fickle and liked to dart around, so he called Bai Danzi over to guard it together. Then he took out the traps from his cloth bag and set traps on all the unguarded cave entrances.
Old Jiang was still worried and shouted, "Put down a few more, otherwise if a dozen or so come out, the first one will step on the trap, and the rest will just run away, and there will be nowhere to chase them."
Hunter Xiao Xu laughed loudly, "Uncle Jiang is dreaming about hunting fox pelts, with foxes lined up in front of him for him to beat."
Where would there be so many foxes? Even a fool would be dreaming. The hunters laughed heartily, and Old Jiang cursed, "What's wrong? You think I'm the only one who dares to think this? You dare say you haven't thought about it? If you ask me, if a dozen or so foxes jumped out of the cave, you'd all be happier than I am."
"That is required."
After the hunters finished their banter, they focused intently on guarding the cave entrance. Suddenly, the noise from below the burial mound grew louder and louder.
Each hunter kept a close watch on their respective cave entrance, guns pointed downwards, ready to fire a shot at any moment if they heard a sound or a shadow peeked out.
Chen Xiangqian was still muttering to himself, saying, "Please don't kill anyone. I'm telling you, I heard last time Qin Pao killed someone, Uncle Jiang, if a head pops out from under the tunnel, please don't fire your gun, it could be fatal. If you really lose control, you might end up in jail with Qin Pao, and the two of you might even end up sitting at the same table in jail, looking out for each other."
He was talking non-stop like a machine gun, making Old Jiang furious and almost hit him with the butt of his rifle.
"You brat, what nonsense are you spouting? Where did this head come from?"
Chen Xiangqian pointed to the tomb raider's hole and said, "Where there's a tomb raider's hole, there are bound to be tomb raiders. Thieves are human too. If they stick their heads out, and you shoot them, their heads will blow off."
These words made the hunters uneasy; upon reflection, they realized the logic in the statement, and they hesitated for a moment. No one wanted to shoot and kill someone—that was illegal.
A dark shadow emerged from the cave.
The cave was right beneath Xiao Xu's feet.
As Xiao Xu was listening to a few people chatting about how a human head crawled out of the tomb, he saw a dark shadow swaying in the gap beneath his feet. Startled, he shouted, "It's coming out!"
In that brief moment of hesitation, before he could pull the trigger, the fox had already escaped.
The fox was so choked by the smoke from the wolf dung that it had no choice but to scurry out of a quiet hole. Its eyes were blinded by the smoke, and even covering its mouth and nose with its tail didn't help.
There were many holes in this burial ground. Almost simultaneously, after the first fox darted out, two or three more foxes emerged from the holes.
Chen Xiangqian shouted, "They're out! They're out!"
Chen Xiangqian and Lao Chen, along with several others, simultaneously opened fire on the shadowy figure.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Several gunshots rang out. In the dark night, a shadowy figure darted about quickly. Then, a wail was heard, and something tripped over.
Old Jiang exclaimed in surprise, "You hit it! Quickly look around, it's still nearby!"
He chased after the noise and suddenly heard a voice howling, "Leg, leg, leg is broken."
Old Jiang's face turned deathly pale, then ashen and extremely unsightly.
He shone his headlamp down and realized that what had just darted out wasn't a fox at all, but rather a few grave robbers digging a tunnel.
"Depend on!"
The hunters shouted loudly and gathered around, puzzled.
Chen Xiangqian was terrified in the dark. Following behind Li Ju'an, he shouted, "They really hit someone? This is really dangerous! Aren't we going to get arrested?"
The hunters were already irritable, and hearing Chen Xiangqian shout like that only fueled their anger.
Old Jiang shouted, "Quiet down! Be quiet!"
He checked the grave robber's injuries and recognized the boy. He kicked him and cursed, "Kui San, you bastard, what are you doing underground?"
The tomb raider was named Kui San, and he was Kui San's neighbor in the village, living across the street. Kui San cried out in pain, his forehead covered in cold sweat, "I just brought a few bosses to scout this place, saying we could make a fortune here, who would have thought we'd get shot?"
Old Jiang scanned the ground and noticed that besides Kui San, there were several other men dressed in thick clothes who looked unfamiliar; they must be the bosses from out of town. There were many gangs in the Xing'an Mountains who engaged in petty theft, and they were quite brazen, but none of them were as audacious as this, daring to raid graves right next to the old work area.
Li Ju'an said, "Let's hand these people over to the police station first, and then we'll come back to catch the fox during the day. The fox is easy to catch, no rush. If we let these people escape, we'll be in big trouble."
