Chapter 4 What difficulties could I possibly face if I made 100 million a day?
The call was from Wang Defa:
"Mr. Wang, I've finished delivering the packages. See you at the usual barbecue place!"
"Okay, I'll be right there."
After hanging up the phone, Wang Guanxi picked up his bag of clothes and hurried back to the Jia Hua Hotel, intending to put the clothes and shoes he had bought back at the hotel first.
As he passed through the lobby, the receptionist still smiled sweetly at him, and even asked if he needed help when she saw that he was carrying so many things.
Wang Guanxi declined the offer because he was in a hurry, but this made him have a better impression of the receptionist.
After putting his things away, Wang Guanxi quickly hailed a taxi to the barbecue restaurant.
Looks like I need to find some time to buy a car, otherwise it'll be inconvenient to take taxis everywhere.
The barbecue restaurant where the two met was located in a small alley in the old town. It was a small storefront, just two combined storefronts with a large shed outside, where a dozen or so folding tables and plastic chairs were set up.
The signboard is quite large.
The words "Barbecue for the People" came into view. The red lightbox had several broken bulbs, and only half of the character "烤" (barbecue) remained, making it look like the character "火" (fire) from a distance.
But business is really good.
The tent was packed with people, filled with smoke, and the sounds of talking, laughter, and clinking glasses mingled together, making it as lively as a silver party.
Wang Guanxi glanced around and spotted Wang Defa at the innermost corner against the wall.
Wang Defa was sitting at a folding table with a pot of tea and two sets of bowls and chopsticks in front of him, scrolling through his phone.
He's still the same as always.
Round face, buzz cut, eyes squint into slits when he smiles.
Wearing a black work uniform with the "SF" logo printed on the chest, he probably came straight here after get off work without having time to change.
"Defa!"
Wang Guanxi walked over and sat down opposite him.
When Wang Defa looked up and saw him, his eyes narrowed into slits.
"Mr. Wang!"
The two exchanged a smile, neither saying anything sentimental.
Sometimes that's how it is between brothers. When you haven't seen each other for too long, all the words you want to say end up being just a joke.
What Wang Guanxi said was, "You're still so fat."
What Wang Defa said was, "You've lost weight."
After saying that, they both laughed.
After seeing Wang Guanxi separate the bowl and chopsticks, Wang Defa poured him a glass of water, then pushed the menu over and said generously, "Come on, order. This meal is on me, order whatever you want."
Wang Defa was thinking that Wang Guanxi must be feeling bad after being fired and back, and he must be short of money. He wanted to help as much as he could.
Wang Guanxi, unaware of Wang Defa's thoughts, glanced at the menu and saw that the prices hadn't changed—still so affordable. He grinned and said, "Alright, then I won't be polite. If someone's treating, I might as well eat!"
Although he is now a billionaire, there is no need to pretend with his childhood friend. He will find another opportunity to make it up to Wang Defa.
So Wang Guanxi didn't hold back and ordered a lot from the menu: "Twenty lamb skewers, eight chicken wings, two dozen oysters, two eggplants, one serving of snails, one serving of fried rice noodles, and one grilled fish."
Wang Defa, listening nearby, twitched his lips: "Are you some kind of reincarnated starving ghost?"
"Didn't you say you were treating?"
Wang Guanxi said this with a straight face.
"I said I'd treat you, but I didn't tell you to order the whole menu!?"
"Enough talk, another order of grilled lamb chops."
Wang Defa clutched his chest, feigning heartache: "Fine, fine, go ahead and order. I've figured it out today. You're trying to bankrupt me on your very first day back."
Wang Guanxi chuckled and handed the menu to the waiter.
After the waiter took the order, Wang Defa pulled out six bottles of beer from under the table, opened the caps with his teeth, and poured a glass for each of them.
"Come on, let's have a toast! Welcome back!"
Wang Guanxi smiled, said nothing, and raised his glass to clink with Wang Defa's.
Seeing Wang Guanxi's silence only confirmed Wang Defa's suspicions.
"Looks like Edison Chen really has been fired."
The dishes were served quickly.
Still a familiar taste.
The grilled lamb skewers sizzled with oil, sprinkled with cumin and chili powder, and smelled incredibly delicious.
The roasted chicken wings were brushed with honey, the skin was crispy and the meat inside was tender and juicy.
The oysters are topped with minced garlic and vermicelli; one bite and the freshness and garlic flavor explode in your mouth.
The two men ate skewers, drank alcohol, and chatted casually.
"By the way, Defa, how's Lin Yanya from junior high doing now?"
Wang Guanxi asked casually.
Wang Defa didn't take it seriously and told them all the gossip he knew:
"Lin Yanya? I heard she's selling clothes at Qianda Plaza now."
"Didn't she marry a pretty rich man? Why does she still need to work?"
"Oh! You mean her husband? His family's restaurant went out of business a long time ago, and he's now delivering packages himself. How can she continue to be a pampered housewife?"
"Oh, I see."
. . . . . .
During the meal, Wang Defa was tactful and didn't mention Wang Guanxi's work at all. Instead, he chatted about interesting stories from the past and the changes in the county. Wang Guanxi joined in the conversation, and the two of them laughed and chatted, enjoying their meal immensely.
When Wang Defa was about 80% full, his phone suddenly rang.
The screen displays the words "wife".
Wang Defa's expression changed.
Just a moment ago, he was all smiles and laughter, but after seeing those two words, his expression instantly changed from "macho man" to "coward".
He glanced at Wang Guanxi, made a "shh" gesture, and then answered the phone.
"Hey, honey."
His voice instantly dropped eight octaves, becoming so gentle that it gave Wang Guanxi goosebumps.
A woman's voice came from the other end of the phone, so loud that Wang Guanxi could hear a few words even across the table.
"Wang Defa! Look at the time! Why aren't you back yet!"
"Right away, right away, I'll be right back."
"You always say 'right away'! Last time, 'right away' meant three hours!"
"This time it really is quick! I was having dinner with my friends, and it was over in no time."
"What friends? Who have you been fooling around with?"
"Nothing going on, just a childhood friend I haven't seen in ages."
"I don't care if you're an old classmate or a former lover, if you don't show up at my door in half an hour, don't come back!"
"Okay, okay, I promise I'll be home within half an hour."
"snort!"
The phone hangs up.
Wang Defa put his phone back on the table and let out a long sigh of relief, as if he had just finished a tough battle.
Looking at him, Wang Guanxi realized he looked exactly like the person he used to be when he received a call from the "Shanghai auntie"—trembling and unsteady—and couldn't help but burst into laughter.
"Wang Defa, I never expected you to be henpecked."
"What do you mean by henpecked? This isn't henpecked, this is... this is respecting your wife, do you understand?"
"Oh, respecting your wife."
Wang Guanxi nodded, his smile widening.
"So, your 'right away, right away' tone just now was also a sign of respect?"
"Stop talking nonsense!"
Wang Defa was somewhat embarrassed and angry by his laughter:
"You'll understand once you're married! This isn't fear, it's wisdom! The wisdom of marriage!"
"Okay, okay, I understand, wisdom."
Wang Guanxi raised his glass and said with a smile, "Come on, let's drink to your wisdom in marriage."
Wang Defa glared at him, but still raised his glass and clinked it against his.
Wang Defa paid the bill, and the two walked to the entrance of the barbecue restaurant to prepare to part ways.
Wang Defa hesitated for a moment, then patted Wang Guanxi on the shoulder and said seriously:
"Edison Chen, I know you might have suffered some injustice in Shanghai. If you encounter any difficulties when you come back, just tell me. I still have some savings, although it's not much..."
Wang Guanxi was stunned for a moment.
difficulty?
What difficulty could I possibly have in earning 100 million a day?
The biggest challenge is figuring out how to spend all the money.
However, upon further reflection, he realized that Wang Defa was genuinely worried about him.
He'd had a little to drink and was a bit tipsy, but without thinking much of it, he waved his hand and said with a smile:
"Don't worry, I'm fine. You should go home quickly, or your wife will scold you. Don't let anything delay things."
Wang Defa was still worried, so he gave a couple more instructions before hurriedly riding his delivery electric bike home, afraid that his wife would scold him if he was even a second late.
Wang Guanxi stood there, watching his back, and couldn't help but smile.
My childhood friend is still the same childhood friend. No matter how I am doing, I will always treat him sincerely.
He took out his phone, opened the JD.com app, and prepared to give Wang Defa a surprise tomorrow.
