Chapter 335: Why Are You Helping Me?
Chapter 335: Why Are You Helping Me?
The beastmen halfway up the mountain hadn’t all escaped before the mountainside gave way, burying those who couldn’t get out in time.
Fox Ji glanced back, his face paling. "Run! Everyone, run!"
Heavy rain poured from the sky, making the mountain path treacherous. Even in their beast forms, escape was incredibly difficult.
"Clan Leader, let’s head toward the outskirts of that big tribe. We need to find shelter from this rain first."
Approaching another tribe’s territory without permission would get them driven away, but they had no better option now.
"Alright, let’s go."
The fastest males took the lead, while the females and cubs, who fell countless times, were pulled back to their feet by the males.
The females and cubs were the tribe’s last hope. The males absolutely could not let any harm come to them.
"We’re almost there! It’s just ahead! We’ll be safe once we reach it."
Ma Qing had originally assembled a patrol to inspect the mountains. However, the rain hadn’t stopped, and going up the mountain now would surely be dangerous, so he had them patrol the outskirts of the tribe instead.
"This is the heaviest rain we’ve had since we got here."
"Yeah, and from the smell of it, it’s not likely to stop anytime soon. Thankfully, the Hunting Team stockpiled some food beforehand. It should be enough for a few days."
As the patrol moved forward, they heard the distant sound of panicked footsteps heading their way.
The patrol stopped.
"You two, go over there and check it out."
Two males stepped forward and ran quickly toward the source of the sound.
They hadn’t run far before they spotted Fox Ji’s group coming toward them.
This path led in only one direction: to the Black Panther Tribe.
’These people are heading for our tribe.’
"Go tell the squad leader that some beastmen are approaching the tribe. Tell him to come over immediately."
"Mmm."
From a distance, Fox Ji and his group saw the male beastman blocking the path ahead.
"Where are you headed?" the patrolman asked, speaking first.
Fox Ji stepped forward and said, "We were temporarily settled on the mountain, but today’s heavy rain caused a landslide. We had no choice but to come down to find a place to shelter from the rain."
The patrolman frowned. "The Black Panther Tribe’s territory is just ahead. You can’t pass. If you want to take shelter, go somewhere else."
It wasn’t that he was heartless, but no one could guarantee this group of beastmen didn’t have malicious intentions. If he let them get too close to the tribe and something happened, the whole tribe would be affected.
Fox Chuan came forward, supported by other beastmen.
"We have absolutely no intention of disturbing your tribe. We just want to wait out this storm. Please, let us pass."
The patrolman didn’t move aside. Just as they reached a standoff, the rest of the patrol arrived.
Fox Ji and his group saw that the approaching males were all imposing, and their expressions grew grim. If these patrolmen insisted on driving them away, they would be no match for them.
"We really can’t let you head toward the tribe, but if you’re looking for shelter, you can circle around this way. There’s a cave over there you can use to hide out."
Fox Ji was about to say more, but Fox Chuan held him back. "Alright. Thank you, we’ll go there now."
At Fox Chuan’s command, all the beastmen headed in the other direction.
Only after they had gone some distance did Fox Ji speak. "Grandfather, why didn’t we plead with them? Maybe they would have let us into the tribe."
Fox Chuan shook his head. "Let’s get out of the rain first."
The squad leader watched them leave and said, "A few of you, follow them. Make sure they don’t get near the tribe."
"Yes, sir."
After reaching the clearing, they found a cave, just as the patrolman had said. It wasn’t large, but it could just about fit some of the beastmen.
"Grandfather, you all should get inside and out of the rain. Don’t get sick."
"I’m fine. Let the females and cubs go in first."
After settling the females and cubs, the males went to find some large leaves to build a makeshift shelter, hoping the rain would end soon.
But it seemed the Beast World did not hear their prayers. Just before dawn, a cry of alarm came from inside the cave. It was Fox Spirit.
"Grandfather, what’s wrong? Grandfather!"
Fox Ji, who had been dozing off, was startled awake. He shot to his feet and rushed into the cave.
"Sister, what is it?"
"Brother, Grandfather... Grandfather has a fever!"
Alarmed, Fox Ji rushed over and felt Fox Chuan’s body. His skin was burning hot to the touch.
"The shaman isn’t with us... What do we do, Brother?"
"Don’t be afraid. A mountain this big is bound to have medicinal herbs. I’ll go look for some now. You take care of Grandfather."
"Be careful, Brother! It’s still pouring outside."
Fox Ji walked out without looking back.
Outside the cave, the curtain of rain nearly blurred his vision, and the downpour greatly dulled a beastman’s keen sense of smell.
Fox Ji raced through the mountains, searching. As he leaped down from a large tree, he accidentally landed on a rock below and took a nasty fall.
"AH!"
The pain made Fox Ji’s face turn pale. He tried to get up but found he couldn’t move at all.
’But Grandfather and my sister are still waiting for me to come back...’
Helplessly, Fox Ji pounded the ground. He tried to get up again and again, only to fall back down each time.
In a nearby tree, Huang Ying watched Fox Ji’s helpless struggle with a blank expression.
Fenglin frowned.
"Let’s go. It’s about time."
Just as Fox Ji collapsed back into the mud, Huang Ying and Fenglin descended from the sky, landing in front of him.
Fox Ji struggled to lift his head. He looked at the two of them, a wary expression on his thin, young face.
’But in my current state, it would be easy for them to kill me.’
"Are you alright? Are you lost in the mountains?" Huang Ying knelt, her face showing the perfect amount of concern.
Fox Ji was surprised. He hadn’t expected her to speak to him with such concern.
Fenglin stepped forward, helped him up from the mud, and moved him under a tree. He spread his massive wings, sheltering him from the rain.
Surprised and grateful, Fox Ji said, "Thank you. I’m not lost. I’m looking for medicine for my grandfather. He has a fever."
"The Black Panther Tribe doesn’t even have medicine for a fever?"
Fox Ji lowered his eyes. "We aren’t from the Black Panther Tribe."
Huang Ying feigned a look of realization.
"So you’re from another tribe. It’s true that the Black Panther Tribe isn’t letting outsiders in right now, but your grandfather’s condition sounds dangerous. He needs medicine immediately. How about this? I have a pouch of dried flowers here. You can take it and trade with the Black Panther Tribe. It should convince them to take you in."
Fox Ji was completely stunned. "You... why are you helping us?"
Huang Ying gave him a gentle smile and reached out to wipe a speck of mud from his face.
"It’s not that I want to help you, specifically. It’s just that you remind me of my younger brother. Back then, if he had met someone like me, perhaps he wouldn’t have died."
The doubt in Fox Ji’s eyes gradually faded.
Huang Ying took out a beast-hide pouch and handed it to him. "Many of these dried flowers can be used as medicine. Take them and trade with the Black Panther Tribe. They will surely soften their stance and let you in."
Fox Ji stared blankly at the pouch before him, slowly reaching out his hand.
"H-How can I thank you?"
"When I need help, I’ll come find you."
Watching Fox Ji’s staggering figure disappear, a triumphant, cold sneer appeared on Huang Ying’s face.
