Chapter 413 Letter
Chapter 413 Letter
The whistle signal on the watchtower was personally set by Lin Baiyan. At this moment, the whistle was blown three times in a long, drawn-out manner, which meant that outsider beastmen had entered the territory of Ten Thousand Beasts City.
Several orcs waiting on the city wall suddenly stood up.
Maoyu asked with some concern, "What happened?"
Lin Baiyan put down the small earthenware pot of pear soup in his hand. "I'll go take a look. Maybe Bao Nan and the others have returned."
As he spoke, he tightened his cloak, opened his oil-paper umbrella, and headed towards the watchtower.
“I’ll go with you,” Lu Xiao said.
Lin Baiyan shook his head. "Stop making a fuss. It's nothing serious. Let Maoyu stay here with you."
"They're still heading this way despite the heavy snow blocking the mountains. I reckon it's a group that went out to search for their clansmen and is returning. But I'll have to go and check it out myself." Lin Baiyan hurriedly gave a few instructions and headed towards the observation platform.
On a watchtower at the southwest corner of the city, the orc guarding the gate blew his horn, and not long after, a figure hurriedly walked up the watchtower.
"High Priest!" Upon seeing the newcomer, the male orc suddenly knelt down on one knee and respectfully called out.
Lin Baiyan quickly waved his hand at him, "Get up quickly."
"Was it you who sounded the horn just now?" Lin Baiyan asked.
The tall, burly male orc scratched his head. "Yes, this is a message brought back this morning by the orcs on patrol, carried by birds. They said there were signs of orc activity near the forest to the south. After receiving the message, I immediately blew the horn. I didn't expect it to be you who came."
"I happened to be on the city wall, so I got here faster," Lin Baiyan explained briefly.
"It's freezing cold here, why didn't you put a charcoal brazier up here?" Lin Baiyan looked around the observation platform. It was deserted, with only a curtain for warmth.
The male orc was a little embarrassed. "We used to have them, but the training camp thought the smoke from the charcoal braziers was too strong and affected our vision, so we stopped using them."
Hearing him say that, Lin Baiyan nodded, "It's not a good idea to keep it frozen like this. I'll look into how to get rid of all this smoke."
The male orc was thrilled to see that the high priest cared so much about their daily lives, and his affection for him soared.
"But let me check the situation outside the city first," Lin Baiyan said.
The male orc quickly handed him a huge tube, a new invention from the factory, called a telescope. The lens inside was made from a stone dredged from a stream near the East River; it was transparent and somewhat like crystal.
Lin Baiyan hauled all the stones back to the factory and had the carpentry team work on them to make a crude telescope.
Although it's not very clear, it's still usable enough.
Lin Baiyan looked through his binoculars into the northwest forest for a long time, "but I still can't see them..."
"What is the High Priest looking for?" The male orc beside him scratched his cheek, looking somewhat confused.
Lin Baiyan smiled slightly, "We're looking for the team we sent out before winter. They just sent word back a couple of days ago that they'll be within the city's territory soon."
Just as he was speaking, a bird suddenly flew down from the sky and circled near the observation deck, seemingly calculating where to put its feet.
Lin Baiyan recognized it at a glance as the working bird from their Beast City. He stretched out an arm, and the bird landed on it, with a small bamboo tube tied to its legs.
"Why did another letter arrive in such a short time?" asked the male orc beside Lin Baiyan.
Lin Baiyan looked closely and suddenly said, "No, these shouldn't be the remaining birds from the tribe!"
The birds used to deliver messages in the tribe were all tamed by him personally, and this one looked like it had just returned from delivering a message a couple of days ago.
Lin Baiyan quickly untied the small bamboo tube and poured out the note inside. There were a few words written on it in crooked handwriting, which were clearly Xi Zhao's handwriting.
"High fever midway, hoping for support." Lin Baiyan's expression changed upon seeing these words, and he quickly ran down the steps.
He had only taken two steps when he bumped into other male beastmen who had come to check from the watchtowers.
The male orc followed him, saying, "High Priest, is there something you need? Perhaps I can run errands for you?"
Lin Baiyan turned his head and saw him, then immediately stopped. He was no match for the male orcs in running speed. "Go, go and tell Elder Hu Zhen to transfer enough fever reducers for a hundred orcs from the treasury."
"Go find Company Commander Yang Ye and tell him to heat up all the kang beds in the houses that were prepared beforehand so they are nice and warm."
"Oh, right, send another person to the training camp to find Xiong Fei, gather a platoon of male orcs, and bring ten wagons with carriages to the city gate to assemble." Lin Baiyan spoke very quickly, giving all the instructions in a flash.
The male beastmen listened to Lin Baiyan's instructions with utmost seriousness, then transformed into their beast forms and vanished in the blink of an eye.
They need to find a few replacements in the reserve camp before they can deliver the message!
Lin Baiyan paced back and forth in place several times.
High fever is no joke; if it gets too high, it could even kill you!
He should have realized this long ago. The Star Wolf Clan beastmen originally lived in the Central Plains, but later inexplicably went to the west. Traveling such a long distance all at once, coupled with the harsh northern weather, it was only natural that they would fall ill.
If I had known this would happen, I should have taken more medicinal herbs with me when Xi Zhao and the others left!
Lin Baiyan quickly walked out of the observation deck and bumped into Maoyu, who was rushing over. "High Priest, what happened?"
Lin Baiyan pursed his lips. "The Star Wolf Clan beastmen have all developed high fevers, and Xi Zhao and the others are now trapped at the end of the East River."
"No, I still have to go with them!" After much deliberation, Lin Baiyan decided that he had to go out himself.
Cat Feather patted Lin Baiyan's arm, "Don't worry too much, our Beast City has more than enough medicinal herbs in reserve. Once we get into the city, everything will be fine!"
Lin Baiyan nodded in agreement.
"By the way, hurry up and take Lu Xiao back to his house. He's due to give birth soon, so it's best to behave yourself!"
As he spoke, he stretched out his arm, and the little bird circling above his head immediately landed. Lin Baiyan handed it to Mao Yu, saying, "Take this little guy to the breeding farm as well, and treat him well for a few days!"
Just as Mao Yu was about to take the little bird, she saw Lin Baiyan abruptly pull her hand back. "I'm so busy I'm dizzy. I'll need the little guy to lead the way later. Never mind, you should go and take Lu Xiao away."
"What about you?"
"I have to go out of the city with them. The information in Xi Zhao's letter was rather vague. I need to make preparations in advance to find out exactly how many orcs are sick!"
Lin Baiyan waved his hand at him, "You can go now!"
Seeing this, Cat Feather had no choice but to obediently run back to find Deer Laugh.
