Chapter 52 Sweet Potatoes
Chapter 52 Sweet Potatoes
A bowl of stir-fried pork slices, a bowl of soup with meat and bones, and the bone broth can be refilled.
Lin Baiyan carried the bowl and walked to the shed where the cured meat had just been smoked.
"Grandma Xiyang, dinner's ready! Go eat, I'll watch over things here."
Xi Yang waved his hand to stop him from coming, "Hou Lin went to serve me, I can do it here. I roughly know how to do it now."
"Didn't you say this would take several days and you'd have to go check on the charcoal? Leave this to us."
"It doesn't take much effort, just adding some cypress branches, which I can keep an eye on while I'm weaving the basket."
The young man thought about it and agreed, "Then I'll bring you the cypress branches we need every day."
Xi Yang smiled and nodded, "That saves us a lot of trouble!"
After agreeing on the terms with Xi Yang, Lin Baiyan sat down in a corner and began to enjoy her dinner.
Believe it or not, the dog spirit does have a talent for cooking; the stir-fried wild vegetables had no bitterness at all and even had a hint of sweetness.
Lin Baiyan slurped down his meal, even ordering two more bowls of bone broth. Ever since he transmigrated into a beastman, he felt his appetite had increased.
After finishing his meal, Lin Baiyan let out a small burp. After three bowls of bone broth, he was fairly full.
After washing his bamboo bowl clean, he went to the entrance of the cave and, by the light of the campfire, he and Hu Jiang used sharp stone pieces to split bamboo strips.
Facing the faint firelight, Lin Baiyan unconsciously yawned softly. He had been busy these past few days, having to check on everything. Now that he was full and had some free time, he felt a little sleepy.
Lang Cang walked over and sat down beside him. "Go to sleep. Stop doing this."
Lin Baiyan heard three voices and tried to open his eyes wide. He reached out and patted his face to wake himself up. "It's not time to rest yet. Nobody has entered the cave."
How could he possibly lead the way in slacking off...?
"Baiyan is sleepy? Then go to sleep. The little ones need a lot of sleep." Hou Lin kept moving his hands and looked at Lin Baiyan with a loving smile.
Lin Baiyan was a little embarrassed, "Grandpa Houlin, those are just little kids who are only a few years old. I'm almost an adult!"
He specifically emphasized the matter of adulthood.
Hou Lin still chuckled, "Aren't they underage? They're still little brats even if they're just one day away from adulthood."
"You've been really busy these past few days, go to sleep."
When Hou Lin said this, the other old beastmen chimed in.
Seeing that everyone was saying this, Lin Baiyan didn't want to refuse their good intentions. Fortunately, it was only for this one day, so he decided to go to bed early.
He returned to his spot in the cave, transformed into a kitten, burrowed into the animal skin blanket, stretched lazily, curled up into a ball, and drifted off to sleep.
When he woke up the next day, he unsurprisingly saw the giant white wolf, Lang Cang, lying not far from his animal skin blanket.
Because he went to bed early the night before, the young man was the first to wake up today. He nimbly skipped over the groups of beastmen in the cave and came out of the cave.
First, I ran to the waterfall to wash my face, then took out a smooth, rubbed piece of fine grass vine fiber to use as a toothbrush and brushed my teeth.
Fortunately, Mao Bai is usually quite clean, and Lin Baiyan was extremely satisfied with his little white teeth. He had to take good care of them.
On the way back, they ran into Hu Qinglu and a few other sub-beastmen. Lin Baiyan greeted them with a smile, "Are you here to wash your faces too?"
The group of sub-beastmen nodded. Before they met the priest, they didn't care much about themselves and would wash their faces whenever they had time.
However, after living with the White Flame Priest for a few days, seeing how clean he always kept himself, even his teeth were incredibly white, their appearances seemed rather "tragic" in comparison.
Of course, the sub-beastmen might not know what appearance is; they just felt they couldn't continue to be so slovenly, so they started to imitate the young people, washing their faces and brushing their teeth every day.
You know what, they suddenly looked much more agile, especially those sub-orcs who were looking for mates. With some bright little flowers or feathers on their heads and pretty stones or animal bone chains on their bodies, they looked quite stylish.
Back in the tribe, after breakfast, Lin Baiyan went to the earthen kiln for a walk. He reached out and touched the wall of the kiln, and felt relieved when he felt the scalding heat.
Half of the hunting party followed Lang Cang on his routine hunt, while the other half followed Lu Xiaoru, who was enthusiastically knocking on the mountain cave.
With the addition of these male beastmen, the construction team's speed increased exponentially.
They have already carved out twenty caves and moved from the east side to the west side.
Lin Baiyan took a few in to look at them, and they were basically all the same layout and size.
After walking around, he added a few more numbers to the stone slab by the chicken coop; today's numbers are 6 to 10.
Through this gradual and subtle influence, the little ones will soon be able to count to one hundred.
With nothing much to do today, Lin Baiyan went with the collection team to Potato Mountain to continue collecting.
When Lin Baiyan arrived there, carrying a basket on his back, he saw that only a small part of the hillside had been mined by the sub-beastmen. Although the potato mountain was called a hillside, it was actually quite large.
Lin Baiyan estimated that they would be able to eat potatoes for quite some time, and he would start planting them next spring.
Lin Baiyan had worked in the fields with his grandmother before. The family had a vegetable garden where his grandmother would plant many kinds of vegetables every year, such as eggplant, cucumber, tomato, potato, cabbage, and green beans. This was enough to supply the family of three with vegetables.
Lin Baiyan picked up his adze and began to work, digging potatoes while trying to find humor in his hardship. His original plan was to retire and return to his old home where he lived with his grandparents, cultivate the land, and be self-sufficient. He envisioned planting a grape trellis in the yard and adding a small recliner, just like when he was a child, he could lie on that recliner and reach out to pick grapes.
I never expected to end up here before I even retired. This is a way of fulfilling my wish, isn't it?
Lin Baiyan was absentmindedly thinking about other things, but his hands didn't stop moving. The potato mountain was very large, and the potatoes inside were relatively sparse, probably because they hadn't been fertilized or watered.
However, the soil here is quite fertile, so some plants grow to be particularly large.
He dug all the way up the hillside to the east, not knowing how long he had been digging. As he dug, he felt that what he was digging up didn't seem to be potato tubers.
After he cleared away all the dirt, Lin Baiyan took a closer look and almost jumped up.
Isn't this a sweet potato?!
There are even sweet potatoes here!
Lin Baiyan quickly wiped the sweet potato clean, and as expected, the encyclopedia in his mind appeared again: sweet potato, also known as yam, is non-toxic, edible, and tastes sweet.
