Chapter 116 Bandits
As night fell, Lin Fei found a spacious place, lit a fire, and prepared to make do there for the night.
He had been away from Jianlu for more than ten days, and now he was almost in Jiangxia County. He was not far from the capital of Southern Tang.
Lin Fei lit a campfire, leaned against a large tree, closed his eyes, and was about to rest.
Suddenly, his eyes snapped open, and an undisguised look of disgust crossed his face: "These damned bastards are practically asking for death!"
Now that Lin Fei's eyes and ears have been opened, no sound or movement within a radius of several miles can escape his perception.
The reason Lin Fei showed such disgust was that a group of damned bandits were killing and dividing the loot by a small lake several miles away.
Although Lin Fei was no longer a disciple of the Jade Emperor Sect, he still felt a deep-seated disgust for these murderous and thieving thieves. Not to mention, the viciousness of their methods was simply unbearable to witness.
"Damn it, you're ruining my sweet dream!" Lin Fei cursed as he stood up. "Since you've run into me, I'll act on behalf of Heaven and punish you inhuman beasts!"
……
Several miles away from Lin Fei's location, beside a small lake, a group of menacing-looking people were dividing up the spoils.
"Boss, this haul is pretty good. Enough for the brothers to enjoy themselves for a while." One of the bandits laughed heartily, holding the treasure in his hand. "That old man Li, as expected of a famous wealthy family for miles around, his family's treasures are truly considerable!"
"That's right, that's right. Robbing this one is more profitable than robbing ten, enough for the brothers to eat for a year and a half!" another bandit laughed. "And that old man Li's daughter, she was truly beautiful. It's just a pity that her health was so poor, the brothers didn't even get to have their fill before she kicked the bucket!"
"That little girl's corpse wasn't wasted either; it allowed the brothers to have their fill, didn't it?" The bandit leader laughed shamelessly. "This old man Li's family alone isn't enough. We need to rob a few more wealthy families. Then we can all retire from this life of crime and become rich and powerful men in the city. It's much better than risking our lives every day to make money."
"Boss, we've already robbed Old Man Li and killed his entire family. If we make another move, we might attract the attention of the authorities!" a bandit beside him said with some worry.
"What's there to be afraid of?" the bandit leader said. "Didn't we already leave evidence at the scene? It was all done by shady characters, what does it have to do with us?"
"The heretics were recently defeated by the righteous sects, so it's not impossible that some of their scattered followers are committing evil deeds." The bandit leader was smug and very satisfied with his plan: "If the local officials encounter this, they'll just downplay it and let it go; they won't report it. Who would suspect that it was us bandits? We brothers can take this opportunity to make a fortune!"
"Hahaha, brother, what a brilliant plan!"
"As expected of the eldest brother, he truly has profound foresight!"
"Once we pull off a few big heists, we can go to the city, buy a few pretty girls, and become rich gentlemen!"
……
The bandits all burst into laughter.
Lin Fei heard everything the bandits said from a distance, and felt an even deeper hatred for these damned bastards.
"Hmph, you've got a good plan! Too bad you've run into me. Go dream on to the King of Hell!" Lin Fei thought to himself as he approached the bandits' location.
Just as the bandits were laughing, a cold wind suddenly blew by, making them all feel a chill on their backs.
These bandits, though not particularly skilled in martial arts, were people who had lived on the edge of death. Their sensitivity to killing intent was far greater than that of many disciples from powerful sects.
The bandit leader, like a startled rabbit, jumped up from the ground and drew his broadsword with a "whoosh": "Who's lurking around like that? Get out here!"
In the darkness, a figure walked slowly and steadily toward the group of bandits.
This person, however, was not Lin Fei.
In fact, Lin Fei originally wanted to immediately take action and finish off this group of wicked bandits, but suddenly felt a sharp killing intent, so he stopped and stayed in the darkness, observing the development of the situation quietly.
The person who emerged from the darkness was a young man who looked to be in his early twenties. He was dressed in coarse cloth clothes and, while not particularly burly, had very well-developed muscles.
He had a scabbardless knife hanging at his waist; the blade was pitted and uneven, and it didn't look like any kind of treasure.
Hidden in the darkness, Lin Fei noticed that the young man's pupils were slightly red, like the color of blood.
The young man held a piece of white cloth in his hand, on which was stained with blood and marked with the image of a long knife. He threw the cloth on the ground and casually asked, "You killed the people of Li Family Village, didn't you?"
The bandit leader was initially somewhat wary, but after glancing at the young man's age and the tattered-looking curved sword at his waist, he sneered, "So what if I killed him? You think you can act as a righteous man?"
"Acting on behalf of Heaven? I have no interest in that," the young man chuckled. "I'm just here to confirm. Since you were the ones who did the killings, that's fine. Do you know what's drawn on this white cloth?"
"Hmph, it's one of the Eight Evil Paths, the symbol of the Blood Slaughter Sect, so what?" The bandit leader said impatiently, "Where did this brat come from, spouting so much nonsense? You don't look like a rich guy. I'm in a good mood today, so get the hell out of here! Otherwise, I'll kill you and use you as a midnight snack for the brothers!"
"You guys don't have very good taste." The young man licked his lips, looking like he was savoring the memory. "I still prefer Jiu Niang's fried beans. That's truly a delicacy. It's a pity you guys don't get to enjoy it."
As he spoke, the young man drew the tattered-looking curved knife from his waist: "Your killings are none of my business. It's unacceptable to let the Blood Slaughter Sect take the blame for you. Since you left everything behind, I'll kill a few people. I can't let this thing be a misnomer, can I?"
"You brat, you're asking for death!" the bandit leader roared. "Where did you come from, brat, daring to mess with me?"
"Oh, right, I almost forgot to introduce myself." The young man smiled slightly, his pupils now completely blood red: "Blood Slaughter Sect, Blood Eight Desolations. Remember the names of those who killed you, so you won't be a confused ghost when you reach the King of Hell!"
